Working with Recruiters 101

When working with recruiters, it is somewhat common for job seekers to give the recruiter permission to send his/her resume anywhere the recruiter sees fit. This is a big mistake, and the main person hurt by this mistake is the job seeker. If you choose to work with more than one recruiter, make sure you specifically tell each recruiter, “Please do not send my resume to any companies without asking me about it first.”
Why? There are a few reasons overall, but the main reason is fairly simple. If a hiring company receives your resume from two or more recruiters (or even from one recruiter and from you personally), they will typically get a bit ‘gun shy’ about hiring you – they are afraid that more than one recruiter will want a fee, and often the company will end up taking you out of consideration for that reason. There have been legal cases where companies have been forced to pay a fee to multiple recruiters, and with the supply of technical professionals as it is today, it is of little risk for an employer to eliminate a resume based on duplicate submission.
jsync‘s policy (and my personal policy since I have been in the recruiting industry) is to always talk to a job seeker first to see if any of our positions are a fit – if it is mutually agreed with the job seeker that we have a fit, we give all the details about the company/position and then we let the job seeker decide if he/she wants to be represented by us at that particular client. This protects you from the possibility of multiple submissions, and more importantly, from being disqualified from a potential opportunity.
