Tech Tips from March 2008 mailer

03/12/2008

  • The Philly JUG kicked off their spring sessions with a huge February gathering of about 150 Java enthusiasts (sponsored by jsync!). If you missed it and are confused by acronyms such as OSGi, SCA, ESB, JBI, SOA, etc., check out the slides from the presentation or a recent article from JavaWorld on OSGi.
  • We’ve heard many more mentions of Google’s MapReduce recently, even though it has been around very long. If you’re not already aware, check out the original details from Google and a recent article from TSS on Why you should care about it.
  • If you have some free time (as it seems many TSS readers do) and are curious about what font other programmers are using, read this.
  • Love Maven? Hate Maven? This article on Codehaus suggest some improvements).
  • If you enjoyed February’s “Client Survey Results” article, this blog entry on 10 Traits to Look for When Hiring a Programmer from TechRepublic is a very nice follow-up. Definitely something to be aware of for either giving interviews or being interviewed.
  • Sun’s CEO Schwartz said something (say that 5 times fast!) during a keynote speech that has people talking. When he mentioned he anticipated Sun taking the ‘J’ off of ‘JVM’ and just calling it a ‘VM’ (or ‘MLVM’ like their Da Vinci project) there was some mixed reaction but the positive seemed to outweigh the negative.
  • Just how Open Source are you? Here is a blog that lists 50 open source alternatives for 50 proprietary products. Interesting.
  • Be sure to store this article as a must read – it’s a virtual round table discussion about the state of persistence in the Java world, featuring commentary from an EJB spec lead, a JDO spec lead, the db4objects architect, and Ted Neward.
  • Here is part 2 of an article by Reza Rahman (who coincidentally spoke to Philly JUG in the fall) about upcoming changes the EJB 3.1 expert group are discussing. Here is a link to part 1 if you happened to miss it.
  • Agile is still a hot topic and not going away anytime soon. Here is a recent survey that shows adoption in comparison with 2005 results.

Classic Vinyl

Are you practicing Test First Design or Test Driven Design? How do they relate to Test Driven Development? What about Test Driven Database Design? Maybe you’d just rather be out test driving a new Porsche? You may be able to answer all of these questions after reading the classic Scott Ambler article here. It won’t get you into that Porsche, but keep reading anyway.
