Tech Tips from January 2008 Mailer

- An interesting article for those of you from the ‘old school’ regarding ‘Life Outside the IDE’. Younger developers should definitely take a look at this as well to get some insight as to why some of your more experienced co-workers may still swear by (and sometimes swear at) text editors. The article doesn’t suggest trashing your IDE, but rather to work outside of it from time to time.
- TheServerSide posted a year end list of the most read news items and from 2007. Hardly newsworthy, but interesting to see what people clicked on there.
- Google Web Tookit Tech Lead Bruce Johnson discusses GWT, it’s evolution and acceptance as an open source tool, and the upcoming releases.
- Sun is out promoting their take on SOA with Java, and here’s a brief summary of an event in Seattle. And a nice PDF as well.
- Bad news for the thousands of you reading this that are still using Netscape browsers. Anyone? We didn’t think so…
- Keep hearing about JBoss Seam but not sure how it fits into your world. A little intro for you.
- If you caught the “Spring Experience” conference, you already know about Spring Integration. If you didn’t, maybe you don’t. Read about it at JavaWorld, SpringSource (the artists formerly known as Interface21), or InfoWorld.
Classic Vinyl – If you’ve been awake in your cube for the last several years, you’ve no doubt become familiar with “Agile Software Development”. If you’re still asleep in your cube, you probably aren’t reading this. Sweet dreams – sometimes ignorance is bliss.
If you’re no longer working in a cube and now spend your days working face-to-face in a team room with your empowered self-organized cross-functional team, congratulations – you may have understood the point of this classic article!
For better or for worse, “Agile” is here. While some organizations take time to adopt Agile practices correctly, it’s not all roses. Unfortunately, in some environments, “Agile” has become the latest justification to establish ridiculous project timelines. Read the article linked above to acquaint yourself with what the Agile Manifesto is really about. Then take a minute to ask yourself, your team, and your customers (if you’re still talking to them) how you’re doing
