Tech Tips from August 2008 Newsletter

08/06/2008

  • The beta version of Java SE6 update 10 has a new feature which enables you to drag an applet from the browser to the desktop. The Return of the Applet?? We’ll see.
  • InfoQ recently posted a video of a Cameron Purdy presentation from QCon San Fran 2007, “Top 10 Ways to Botch Enterprise Java Applications Scalability and Reliability”. There is a 1 hour video if you’ve got time to kill, or you can just peek at his slides. An entertaining and bright speaker.
  • After all the JavaFX banter at JavaOne, it was only a matter of time before we were inundated with info, tips, and all sorts of flag waving. Sun launched the JavaFX preview recently, and it’s a pretty slick looking page. They only recommend it for early adopters and not for commercial apps yet. There is also a 4 part article series (so far) on Sun’s Java page that gives a nice walkthrough of it from a developer’s perspective.
  • Got kids? Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. Who will keep the code you’ve written elegant in your old age? We stumbled on this site designed to get kids interested in Java, recommended for computer literate children above the age of 10. Or that pesky 8 year old that turned your microwave into a hovercraft for the science fair.
  • Obligatory Google post…Seen Protocol Buffers yet? Google is touting this as a ‘language-neutral, platform-neutral, extensible mechanism for serializing structured data – think XML, but smaller, faster and simpler.’ IF (get it? A big if!) Google can get some traction and convince the developer community to use their wares, watch out everyone!
