More Reasons To Be Thankful In 2006

In November of 2005, we used the Recruiter’s Corner column to list ‘Reasons To Be Thankful You Are A Java Professional’. We felt this year we should remind you again to be thankful, but we wanted to provide you with updated information and statistics. Should you be more thankful this Thanksgiving than in 2005? You be the judge…
- Last year’s stat: 4.5 million in the Java Developer Community. This year’s stat: Over 5.5 million downloads of the Java EE SDK
- According to Money Magazine and Salary.com, you have the best job in the world based on growth, pay, and stress levels. The Bureau of Labor statistics project a 46% 10 year growth rate for software engineers and an average salary over $80K. The projected growth rate should outpace the supply of new entrants (college grads, immigration) to the economy, which you know (if you’ve ever taken an economics class) will drive up prices/salaries. The future looks bright for you!
- Last year we reported that Monster.com listed ‘Java’ as #9 on their list of most popular keywords searched by employers. Being so close to Election Day, in the interest of fair and balanced reporting, this year we go to Dice.com. Dice’s Philadelphia Local Market Report tells us that after jobs peaked in June, there was a short job slowdown in July (as predicted by us) and then a strong rebound in August and September. Dice also lists ‘Java’ as the ‘#1 IT Skill Set’ based on nationwide numbers, and Dice even chose to list ‘J2EE’ separately than ‘Java’ (J2EE placed #9). Not to mention that Philly area Java professionals earn more than the national average, according to statistics from Dice and Salary.com.
