Making the Right First Impression

We all know the cliche about first impressions. In our conversations with both technical managers and human resources representatives, we have learned that interviewers will quickly form opinions (positive and negative) about a candidate before a word is spoken. Here are some ideas to consider in making a strong and positive first impression when going on an interview.
The receptionist – Your first contact at an interview is often the receptionist or a human resources representative. Believe it or not, we know of candidates who have ruined the interview before it even started by being disrespectful to the receptionist, HR, or security personnel. Just because someone will not be involved in the interview doesn’t mean you should treat them any differently – make a conscious effort to be courteous and respectful of everyone you meet at the company.
The waiting room – Look alive and attentive, sit up straight, and don’t be fidgety.
The handshake – Firm, but no need to show off your strength. Extend your arm comfortably. A handshake is expected when you are greeted AND when you say goodbye.
The clothes – Dress to impress unless you are specifically instructed not to – some clients may ask that you come business casual, but assume that for most interviews a suit is expected. If you are actively interviewing for positions, make sure your suit(s) are ready a few days in advance and that you are wrinkle free. Polished shoes are a nice touch.
The cosmetics – Make up should be conservative. If they greet you as “Tammy Faye”, take the hint. If you choose to wear perfume or cologne, use the “less is more” approach. Interview rooms are often small – don’t overpower your interviewers with scent, overpower them with substance.
The bling-bling – Wearing some jewelry is fine, but again, don’t overdo it. Conservative is best here as well.
