Jobs - A Holiday Shoppers Guide

Most people think of December as a time that is perhaps too busy to start searching for a new job. Many people who are seeking jobs in November even put off their job search efforts until after the arrival of the new year. The majority of employees hired in December will not begin their new jobs until January anyway. If you were among those that thought December was a bad time to be a job seeker, here are some reasons to reconsider.
Budgets – IT managers get a certain budget for the year, and most of them hope to get an equal or higher budget in the upcoming year. Yet most companies will not give a higher budget to a manager who has not used his/her entire budget for the prior year. In other words, many managers will be scrambling this month to spend money and make headcount to ensure they will get a higher budget for 2007. This equates to unexpected opportunities for job seekers.
Competition – Most professionals don’t consider the holiday season as a hot time for job seekers, so the amount of applicants and available talent is lower than during peak hiring times. Lower amounts of available talent, combined with high demand (as we appear to have in December 2006) results in higher potential salaries and a greater chance of getting offers. This month is definitely a seller’s market.
Spirit – Believe it or not, the festive holiday spirit even translates to large corporations. People generally are in a more generous mood during this time, so a few more dollars may be possible. Companies tend to loosen up their environment, so interviews can be more friendly and offers more lucrative.
jsync – We’ve got more open jobs right now than we would have ever imagined for this time of year, and arguably more very attractive opportunities than we’ve had all year. We promise to take good care of you, walk you through the process, and help negotiate the best possible deal.
