Crystal Ball for 2007

01/10/2007

by Dave Fecak

We thought we’d dive right into the pile of people making predictions for 2007 for the Java market. Here are some things we are predicting:

  • Ajax will continue to get a ton of hype, and eventually some local companies will slowly begin to use it. It won’t live up to the hype (how could it), but it will gain some momentum.
  • JSF gets less hype and still doesn’t catch on in most shops.
  • SOA and Web Services begin to catch up to the expectations. Headlines like ‘Are SOA and Web Services Over?’ continue to dog them, but slowly they build steam towards the end of the year.
  • Acquisitions – as many have noted in their predictions, Interface21 (the Spring people) and RedHat are prime candidates for an acquisition. I imagine both will be bought in 2007.
  • NetBeans and Eclipse continue their dominance in the IDE market, with NetBeans gaining some market share. Other IDE’s lag behind and it becomes a two horse race. GlassFish gets some share of the app server market.
  • The demand for Java talent in the Philadelphia area and nationwide continues to rise, while supply remains relatively unchanged, driving up compensation packages. This will also lead to the return of the sign-on bonus for some companies.
